The Rooster Dog (based on a true chicken)

I had a baby chick that thought it was a dog

And my dog thought the chick was a weird-look’n pup

She felt kinda bad for the itty bitty chicken

So at night they would cuddle up and she would lick him

The chick grew up into a red cock

But deep down inside he knew he was a dog

He loved to play fetch like any dog will do

But when he tried to bark it was bark-a-doodle-do

The rooster and dog were best of friends

And loved each other until the end

They chased raccoons and squirrels up trees

And bird and cats

Also up trees

The dog had a litter of seven little pups

Who all grew up with a rooster for a brother

He taught them how to fetch like any dog will do

But when they learned to bark it was bark-a-doodle-do

Crows in the Rye Fields

Have you been to the rye field’s end

Where the plows turn around and the crows come down from the mountain

Have you seen how they have no fear

Wave back at the man in the hat with a straw-toothed grin

Have we dined on the devil’s dime

Do we owe all our seeds all our bones all our oats all our souls

Have you been to the river bend when the heat lies low and the moon and the sunshine flow

When the heat lies low and the sun and the moonshine flow

I took two shots at the sky

And sent them damn birds a-flying

We’ll drink and dance ’till the morning

Until that bitter wind starts blowing

Down at the rye fields’ end

Scrambled Eggs

Been so long since I seen my baby, don’t know if she loves me no more

Been so long since I seen my baby, hope she’s waiting at the front door

Gonna make love tonight, scrambled eggs in the morning!

Been so long since I seen my doggie, told him ‘git stay home’

Been so long since I seen my doggie, brought him back a bag of bones

Gonna make chicken tonight, scrambled eggs in the morning!

Been so long since I played this guitar, you know they took mine away

Been so long since I played this guitar, so I swam across that bay

Toast and jam’n tonight, scrambled eggs in the morning!

Blame Peter Cooper (Full Steam Ahead)

I quit my job I took my pay I sold my house up in the woods I said goodbye to all my friends

Who live down by the river

Sideways stares across the town you lost your mind no mine is set I’m heading west staking my claim

Call me alfalfa desperado

In broken boots I ride behind a feathery white plume

Black burning diamonds

Full speed ahead on a steam train and I’m still laying track

Full speed ahead on a steam train and I’m never looking back

Sweating blood out in the sun I’m working earth as dry as bone my rows of dirt just turn to dust

Can’t grow no weed can’t wet my whistle

Got no trees to build a house so I made a cave made out of mud I told my mule my only friend

Out here it’s hard to lay a hoedown
